The Yard.
More than 25 years of surprise, adventure, learning, growing and fun!
Along with others from our industry, including customer TB Mackay Energy Services and suppliers Purmo, Grundfos, ACL Invensys and Worcester, William Wilson have made a significant contribution to the refurbishment of premises at Edinburgh charity the Yard.
Based at 22 Eyre Place Lane in Edinburgh, the Yard is a purpose built indoor and outdoor adventure playground for children and young people with additional support needs and children in the community.
The Yard provides care, support, fun and friendship in equal measure while promoting challenge and personal growth in an environment which values independence and celebrates the capabilities and achievements of each individual child.
Our story begins with the Yard being selected by the BBC to feature in the Children in Need special edition of the hugely popular show, DIY SOS.
Technical Heating Sales Enginneer, Bruce Adamson explained;
“From a heating design point of view the job was quite difficult as all the conventional methods of heating were just not suitable for this project and every avenue I looked down seemed to be a dead-end!”
“Normally a building of this nature, steel clad and with its high ceiling, would have been an ideal candidate for under-floor heating, however due to the timescale involved, the amount of joinery work required and the fact that much of the floor would be covered with activity equipment, that solution was knocked on the head immediately!”
“Plan B was de-strat* fans to bring down all the heat from high-level, but as many of the children have a medical condition which can easily lead to stress and trauma from noise and moving parts, this could not be considered.”
*Low velocity de-stratification fans are specifically designed to lower the fuel consumption of space heating systems and, at the same time, improve comfort levels. The gentle displacement of warm air from the roof void down into the working zone converts wasted heat into useful heat reducing fuel consumption. An additional benefit is the ability of the fans to enhance comfort levels by creating a uniform pattern of heat throughout the area within which they are installed.
Bruce continued; “I felt the best option for the project was suspended radiant panels, however due to the timescale available, the three companies I approached, whilst sympathetic to the project, were unable to commit.”
Therefore it was back to good old radiators!
“This meant that we had a fighting chance of getting materials on site in time and we were also able to rely on the generosity of our major radiator supplier, Purmo, who agreed to supply the product for the BBC Children in Need Appeal.”
“For safety reasons the radiators could not be fitted at normal floor level, so they had to be fitted within a 300mm gap at high level . This meant that the radiators were non-stocked items from William Wilson. However after finding out which sizes Purmo had in stock, we were able to put together a kit suitable for purpose.”
These kits were ordered by George Balloch at our Edinburgh branch and all delivered complete and on-time.
“I also approached Grundfos, and ACL Invensys for pumps and controls to see how generous they were feeling and succeeded in getting some free product from them too. Job Done!”
Nick Knowles, presenter of DIY SOS said: “The Yard has a truly magical quality about it, everyone who I have spoken to has nothing but praise for the service. This is reflected in the time and effort that all the trades and everyone involved have made to transform this much loved and desperately needed place.“
For The Yard and the families who use it, this has been the chance of a lifetime. The building was first opened in 1993 by HRH Princess Anne and has been virtually untouched since. Today with all its services running at capacity and many children and young people playing there 6 days a week, BBC DIY SOS couldn’t have come at a better time.
William Wilson wishes to acknowledge the time, effort and generosity of all the suppliers who contributed to the project. |

Salford & Liverpool Branch Relocations
We’ve recently undertaken a review and reorganisation of our branches in England. This means from Monday the 2nd of April 2012 our branch in Salford will relocate to the Plumb Center branch at 4 Brunel Avenue, Liverpool Street, Salford M5 4BE.
Our branch at Liverpool will also convert to become a Plumb Center branch in the near future.
These decisions have not been taken lightly, particularly as both branches have been an integral part of the William Wilson business for many years. We firmly believe, however, this is the best solution for these branches, ensuring the majority of staff have continuity of employment whilst working for a leading Wolseley UK brand in England. |
